Austrian school circa 1700 Presumed portrait of Charles Albert of Bavaria, later Charles VII Canvas Height : 134 cm Width : 111 cm Old restorations Provenance : - Sévigny family, Château de Luret. The model for this portrait could be Charles Albert of Bavaria (1697-1745), son of Elector Maximilian-Emmanuel of Bavaria (1662-1726) and Therese Sobieska (1676-1730), daughter of Polish King John III Sobieski (1629-1696). In 1717, Charles Albert joined the Bavarian auxiliary corps alongside the Austrian army in the Venetian-Austro-Ottoman War (1714-1718). He inherited Bavaria in 1726, following the death of death of Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740) and became Charles VII. In 1742, he was elected Holy Roman Emperor the first Wittelsbach since the 14th century. Our portrait features a Turkish headdress, suggesting victory over the Ottomans. The galley flying a flag blue and white horizontal stripes is that of Bavaria. In addition, the baton in the model's right hand evokes the figure of a sovereign, prince or elector.
